Gini Stringer Named Torchbearer in the TORONTO 2015 Torch Relay for the Pan Am Games

excited to announce that Gini Stringer has been nominated to be a Pan Am
torchbearer in the TORONTO 2015 Torch Relay for the Pan Am Games. A champion in our community, Gini embodies the
characteristics of a torchbearer - community, celebration, participation and
As a Pan Am torchbearer, Gini will help spread the
excitement of the Pan Am Games throughout Orillia. She was selected for her
extensive community support and dedication.
Stringer is the personification of a “Community Champion”.
Gini and her
husband Trevor, as owners of Sunshine Carpet and Flooring, have been the recipients
of the Orillia Today’s Readers Choice Award “Best Flooring Store” for 15
consecutive years, the Orillia Packet and Times “Orillia’s Best” award for 5
consecutive years. They have been recognized nationally by the G.E. Shnier
Retail Council as a “Diamond Dealer”.
Carpet and Flooring is a proud community supporter whose charitable works
include providing flooring to 4 areas of Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital,
Couchiching Jubilee House, Comfie Cat Shelter and 4 Habitat for Humanity homes.
They are major event sponsors to Streets Alive and Diva Day. Many local groups
are also the recipients of Sunshine’s generosity. These include OSMH Hospital
Capital Campaign, YMCA, Lions Oval Public School Playground, Orillia Santa
Claus Parade, Canada Day Orillia, Kiwanis Club Auction, Rotary Club Festival of
Trees, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowlerama, plus a host of golf tournaments and
In the past Gini
has served on several community Boards including the Orillia District Chamber
of Commerce and the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation. During her
time with the Chamber of Commerce she sat on a number of committees and served
a term as President. She continues to sit on committees as a non-Board member.
With the Hospital Foundation she was not only Chairman of the Board for a
regulated 2 year term but also helped pilot their annual golf tournament and
their Wine Tasting Gala. She was also involved with their Hospital Capital
Campaign which raised 12 million dollars for OSMH. She continues to sit on this
Board as an Honorary Member. Gini has also held a seat on the Orillia Economic
Development Committee and the Terry Fox Run Committee. Currently, Gini is an active member of the
Orillia and Area Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, The Georgian
College Advisory Board, the Lakehead University Community Relations Committee,
OSMH’s Clinical Services Oversight Committee, the Orillia Business Women’s
Association and the Orillia Construction Association. She has been awarded
“Business Leader of the Year” for 2002 by the Orillia Business Association, the
Paul Harris Fellow Award (2009) from the Rotary Club and was Orillia’s “Woman
of the Year” for 2014.
As a cancer
survivor, Gini has also found time to develop the local “Look Swell, Feel Well”
group, was a member of the Orillia Chapter Breast Cancer Support Group, and was
trained by the Cancer Society of Canada to become a volunteer “Support Friend”
counselling cancer patients on a one to one basis. Gini continues to visit
patients and families who are dealing with cancer.
Gini is a
proud mother of 4 children and a very proud grandmother of 6 grandchildren.
Through OLG’s presenting partnership of the TORONTO 2015 Pan
Am Torch Relay, we are proud to have Gini Stringer represent our community as
part of the OLG Pass It ONtario Program.

Apprenticeship Bursary Accepting Applications
Apprenticeship Bursary Applications Available
If you are an apprenticing student, in the Orillia
area or Muskoka, you may be eligible for a bursary from The Apprenticeship
Bursary Fund, managed by The Community Foundation of Orillia and Area. The Foundation is accepting applications
until 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1st,
The Apprenticeship Bursary Fund has been
established in order to assist apprenticing students with their day-to-day
costs so that they can focus on learning. The fund was set up by family and friends in
memory of the late Robert Fletcher. Bob
worked as an electrician for over fifty years in the Orillia and Muskoka area. A hard-working, honest, and reliable man, Bob
was an excellent and tough teacher to those whom he mentored and taught. Many of his apprentices have described him as
a positive influence, instilling in them a remarkable work ethic and a strong commitment
to the job.
Selection Criteria and Process:
will be provided to an apprentice who has completed at least his/her first year
of HVAC, electrical or plumbing apprenticeship training and who is completing
this training in either the geographical boundary served by the Community
Foundation of Orillia and Area or in Muskoka, Ontario. Students will be asked to submit
an Apprenticeship Bursary Application Form, with a resume and two letters of
Guidelines and the application may be
