                        Description

Lakehead University presents to Orillia District Chamber of Commerce Members:  WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING AT LAKEHEAD 2020/2021 UPDATE
With the ongoing and generous support of RBC Future Launch, the Faculty of Business Administration (FOBA) and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) at Lakehead have developed new options to ensure that our students continue to be as “workplace ready” as possible.
The challenges presented to students and employers by the new reality of the COVID 19 pandemic have made it even more important that our students can meet the expectations of the changing economy around the world. WIL at Lakehead is pleased to offer the following new and completely customizable options (both paid and unpaid) to the business community that can range from short-term projects to long-term internships.
                        PAID OPTIONS
These paid site placement and project options provide students with employment opportunities that are directly related to their field of study
Funding of 75% of wages up to a maximum of $7500 is available through the Government of Canada’s Student Work Placement Program. Funding will be pre-approved prior to hiring the student.
WIL at Lakehead will assist employers with the funding application for these options
                        Link to Funding Application
                        Paid Site Placements
This option provides students with a supervised WIL Site Placement in an approved organizational setting that gives students extended opportunities to apply classroom-based learning in a real-world setting.
Combined with critical reflection and a series of integrative foundational skills workshops the placement enables the development of work-readiness and allows students to integrate classroom theory and real-world practice.
Students can begin their placements starting in the fall semester and complete them at the end of March. Over the six-months, students will schedule time with the employer (approximately 6 hours a week, totaling 144 hours), providing sufficient opportunities for students to learn and take on tasks and activities in a wide variety of roles.
Students can work additional hours by agreement between the employer and the student.
WIL at Lakehead will assist with the funding application.
                        Paid Site Projects
The Site Project involves short term employment for students wherein they work a defined number of hours to complete a specific project or deliverable proposed by a community partner. We accept project proposals from employers and partners throughout the year and then match students that can best meet the expectations of the projects. These projects can occur at any time during the year including spring/summer.
Students are supported by FOBA and the Experiential Learning Navigator to ensure that goals and timelines are being met.
WIL at Lakehead will assist with the funding application.
                        UNPAID OPTIONS
                        In-class Projects and Cases
WIL at Lakehead supports FOBA faculty and students in the development and procurement of in-class assignments and cases based in real time with real organizations. These projects can be completely customized based on course learning outcomes, year level, and the needs of faculty/students/partners
                        Unpaid, For-Credit Work-Integrated Field Placement
New for 2020/21, the Faculty of Business Administration is offering an unpaid, for-credit Work-Integrated Field Placement course. This new course is restricted to undergraduate students who have successfully completed 2nd year and have declared their majors.
The course provides a supervised WIL Field Placement in an approved organizational setting that gives students extended opportunities to apply classroom-based learning in a real-world setting.
Combined with critical reflection, a series of integrative foundational skills workshops enables the development of work-readiness and allows students to integrate theory and practice.
Students will dedicate the equivalent of 1 day per week over two semesters for a total 192 hours.
